Mini-Courses

Mini-Courses are hands-on courses that last for 6 weeks for about 2-hours a day. These courses are based on a student’s interest. Some of the mini-courses we are doing right now include cooking, boat-building, martial arts, guitar, and first aid/CPR.
Some mini-courses we have done in the past are yoga, tai chi, carpentry, art, rock climbing, toboggan building, fly tying, canoeing, photography, and pottery.

Why do Mini-Courses? Because this gives us an opportunity to try something we otherwise would not have an opportunity to try. Also, we do them on Fridays so it is a great motivation to get all of our work done for the week.

My mini-course is cooking. I am excited about this course because I can learn how to make different things I did not know how to make before. Then I can cook more at home and can bake things like creme brulee and Napoleon pastries. I can also learn how to do different things like mixing and stirring together ingredients and chopping and dicing vegetables and other big ingredients.

Not only am I enjoying my mini-course, but the other students are enjoying theirs as well. In martial arts, my peers are learning how to defend themselves. In the boat-building course, they are learning how to put together and paint boats. The guitar class is a great musical experience and is another fun course to try.

These courses help us come to school with an “I’ll try” attitude! Everyone is enjoying them, and we’re learning a lot too!
